🚴 Nottingham cyclist completes 23,000km Melbourne-to-Melbourne journey
Rob Goliah, 36, from Nottingham completed a six-month, 14,291-mile cycle from Melbourne, Derbyshire to Melbourne, Australia, visiting 22 countries from June 29 to December 26. The journey was inspired by his Australian rules football background after Covid-19 canceled the 2020 International Cup and a South Africa car crash ended his playing career. Goliah broke his nose going over handlebars in Kazakhstan and faced 100km stretches between towns, but raised over £5,700 for Mind and Look Good Feel Better. Friends joined sections of the route while equipment was carried separately to enable completion on a road bike. | Source
🙏 Six-year-old saves dad's life after home phone emergency lesson
Finlay, 6, from Robert Miles Infant School in Bingham, saved his dad Phil's life after calling 999 and speaking calmly with emergency services when Phil collapsed at home in October. Mum Elaine had recently taught him to use the home phone in emergencies instead of disconnecting it, with Finlay putting the lesson into practice just days later. He let in a friend to help and met ambulance staff at the door while Phil needed emergency compressions before hospital. The school recognized his bravery with a certificate, using the incident to teach pupils what to do in emergencies. | Source
🌳 £107k nature reserve planned next to Coventry Lane developments
Broxtowe Borough Council is planning a £107,000 nature reserve at a former 18-acre quarry and landfill off Coventry Lane in Bramcote, next to 639 new homes. The site, capped and restored by Biffa, will get improved pathways, parking, picnic areas and seating to support increased visitors from Miller Homes' 470-property development and Peter James Homes' 169 homes. Cabinet will consider the changes on February 3, funded by Biffa, alongside designating it the borough's 15th nature reserve. Public consultations will determine the management plan and name, with some steep areas restricted to prevent injuries. | Source
