📚 Sherwood Library opening 17 April after two-year delay
Sherwood Library on Spondon Street opens 17 April, almost two years after its original summer 2024 target following discovery of over 130 defects. Council leader Neghat Khan calls it "a really important moment for the community" after residents repeatedly said how much they missed the space. The project faced delays after contractor Dako Construction collapsed in 2023. The new facility features children's area, free WiFi, public computers, study tables, bookable meeting room and balcony with Woodthorpe Park Nursery plants, alongside homes and a Sainsbury's beneath the library. The mobile library at Woodthorpe Grange Park continues Saturdays until 11 April. | Source
❤️Jack Taylor's bench at Gedling Country Park celebrates research
Jack Taylor, 19, from Nottingham is one of 65 people with cardiovascular disease honored with a British Heart Foundation red bench celebrating 65 years of lifesaving research. Jack collapsed from cardiac arrest playing basketball aged 17 on February 12, 2024, when an off-duty Red Cross instructor performed CPR and used a defibrillator. Given less than 10% survival chance, he spent nine days on life support at Glenfield Hospital before diagnosis with inherited condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at Harefield Hospital. His dad and twin brother also have the gene change. Jack now studies Software Engineering and hopes the Gedling Country Park bench encourages people to learn CPR. | Source
🐶 Wildlife trust recruiting "ambassadogs" for lead campaign
Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is recruiting volunteers and their "ambassadogs" to extend its Lead by Example campaign to Idle Valley Nature Reserve near Retford. The trust introduced a blanket on-lead ban in 2022 following increased dog ownership during Covid, with six volunteers already spreading the message at sites including Attenborough and Skylarks. The campaign incentivises responsible behaviour with free treats and "dog of the week" celebrations. Head of communications Erin McDaid says having a dog on-lead makes asking others infinitely easier than just posting signs people ignore. | Source
