⚽ Local charity football team raises £3,000 in first year supporting worthy causes
This week we were lucky enough to be contacted by an incredible local initiative which we want to give a well-deserved shout out! Nottingham-based Snakes United FC is marking its first anniversary as a charity football team, raising £3,000 in its first year for various causes close to the hearts of its members. What started as a casual seven-a-side kickabout between friends in 2019 has transformed into a dedicated eleven-a-side charity team with over 40 people now involved.
The turning point came in October 2024 when founder and Chairman Jordan played for Sands United FC, a team supporting bereaved fathers. Playing in honour of his dad who lost a son, he witnessed firsthand how the team created a community of support while promoting mental health through being active and social, without the intense pressures of league football. That experience inspired the expansion of Snakes United from a friendly gathering into something bigger.
The team plays once a month against other charity or casual football sides, with a unique approach to fundraising. Rather than dedicating themselves to a single cause, every player gets randomly selected to nominate a charity meaningful to them, with subsequent matches supporting that chosen cause. Past beneficiaries have included charities nominated by sponsors like FHP Property Consultants, with funds raised through creative activities. Looking ahead, Snakes United aspires to grow further and increase the impact they make in the community - amazing work, guys!
🌉 Historic pedestrian bridge to be lifted over River Trent in November
Nottingham's first new river crossing in over 65 years will be lifted into place using Europe's biggest crane on November 10, weather permitting. The 85-meter Waterside Bridge will connect Trent Basin with Lady Bay, creating a 4-meter-wide path for pedestrians and cyclists. The crane will require 63 lorries to assemble and will dominate the skyline for several days before the lift. Public viewing spaces will be created for residents to watch the historic installation, though disruption is expected with the River Trent closing during the operation. The government-funded bridge is due to open in spring 2026. | Source
💷 Three Nottingham areas secure £20m government funding for community renewal
St Ann's East, Broxtowe and Cinderhill will receive up to £20 million over ten years through the government's new £5 billion Pride in Place programme. The funding gives residents power to revitalise their neighbourhoods through projects like improving community spaces, reclaiming empty shops and creating parks and cultural venues. Nottingham city as a whole will also benefit from an immediate £1.5 million boost for shared spaces and high streets. The areas join just three other East Midlands communities selected for this level of long-term investment, with local people leading decisions on how funds are spent. | Source
