City Council approves 3.5% tax rise - the lowest in 18 years

Nottingham City Council has approved a 3.5% council tax rise - the lowest in 18 years - meaning Band D properties will pay £2,342.08, totalling £2,755.39 with police and fire elements. Deputy leader Ethan Radford says the budget represents the end of the city's "long financial nightmare" after government-appointed commissioners left last month following the authority's effective bankruptcy declaration in 2023. The council also confirmed £25 million investments including more neighbourhood safety officers, improved street cleaning, fly-tipping enforcement, parks and roads, while expecting a £1 million underspend. | Source

🧠 University of Nottingham research reveals how brain reactivates lost memories

University of Nottingham researchers have discovered that memories we think we've forgotten are actually still stored in our brains - we just can't access them. Using brain imaging technology, the School of Psychology team found that our brains reactivate these lost memories even when we're not consciously aware of it. The findings could change how dementia is treated, suggesting doctors should help patients access existing memories rather than trying to rebuild lost ones from scratch. | Source

🛟 River Trent rescuer comes forward after BBC appeal

Alexandra Szilvasi, 36, has been reunited with Steven Ballard, the fisherman who rescued her and 10-month-old spaniel Snickers from the flooded River Trent at Gunthorpe on February 23. Steven was fishing when he heard screams and saw the puppy in difficulty after diving for a ball, followed by Alexandra jumping in. With the river a meter and a half high and extremely turbulent, Steven climbed down a ladder to lift Snickers onto the bank before Alexandra pulled herself up. The delivery driver from Bilborough made a BBC appeal to find her rescuer after they didn't exchange details, wanting to thank him properly with a pint. | Source

🦁 Council House lions restored to former glory with spring clean

The Old Market Square lions have been jet-washed for less than £200 after algae and moss formed during recent wet weather, earning them the nickname "Green Lions" online. Deputy leader Ethan Radford says the two-tonne Art Deco statues have "cleaned up really well and look great standing proud" in front of the Council House, though stonework repairs are still needed for the building's facade, dome, flooring and leaking roof areas. The pair were sculpted by Joseph Else, head of Nottingham School for Art in the 1920s, with the Wetherspoon pub overlooking the square named in his honour. | Source

Food and Drink 🍽️

The latest and greatest in Nottingham’s awesome food & drink scene.

🌭 New food festival launching at Victoria Embankment in July

The Nottingham Food Festival debuts at Victoria Embankment on July 11-12, promising to bring global cuisines, live music and family entertainment to the riverbank. Festival director Michael Johnston says the event aims to become a vibrant addition to the city's summer calendar, showcasing local talent and international influence through performing arts and world flavours. A street food arena will feature regional vendors, artisan markets and locally-sourced specialties, while two streets of independent bars and a Vocation Brewery ale house. Eight live cookery demonstrations, tribute acts, magic shows, comedy, circus workshops, scavenger hunts, dog shows and inflatable jousting provide all-ages entertainment. Nottinghamshire Mind is the primary charity partner, building on £164,000 raised collectively for Mind charities nationwide. Definitely one for the diary! | Source
